Darwin Nunez consoles Alisson after penalty shootout defeat ends season – Liverpool FC

Alisson’s season came to an end in a penalty shootout defeat as Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay dominated Brazil’s Copa America defeat to advance to the semi-finals.

It was a battle of the Reds in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning for us in the UK, with Nunez and Alisson competing for a place in the final four.

Both were named in their respective starting lineups, as they have been throughout the tournament so far, and knew a semi-final against Luis Díaz’s Colombia was on the cards.

The match was not exciting in terms of shots on goal, with Brazil managing three and Uruguay just one over the 90 minutes.

As such, Alisson only had to make one save and six recoveries, but had 48 touches of the ball – the ninth most of any player on the pitch – according to FotMob.

Nunez, on the other hand, touched the ball 28 times, had two shots on goal from Alisson blocked and was substituted in the match in the 78th minute, which ruled him out of the penalty shootout.

The Selecao had late hopes of avoiding a penalty shootout after Nahitan Nandez was sent off for a foul, leaving Uruguay with 10 men for the final 16 minutes, but failed to capitalise.

It was penalties and unfortunately Alisson’s one save from José Giménez’s penalty was not enough and Uruguay won 4-2 on penalties.

Nunez consoled his Liverpool team-mate after the dust had settled, with the pair exchanging words and a hug as they prepared to go their separate ways.

Alisson’s season is over after 40 combined appearances for club and country, which marks his return to pre-season on July 29.

Liverpool’s number 9, on the other hand, will go all the way in the Copa America, whether in the final or in the third-place play-off, meaning he will only return on August 5.
