Chelsea tipped as Liverpool rival by Newcastle star Anthony Gordon after PSR saga

Newcastle United fans were left reeling by the news last weekend that their star player Anthony Gordon had been offered to Premier League rivals Liverpool in a move designed to ease their concerns over the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Chronicle Live understands Liverpool were approached with a proposal that was not right for the club. The Daily Mail reported that the proposed deal included defender Jarell Quansah, who Liverpool do not want to lose, and this has been confirmed.

Newcastle, like all Premier League clubs, could be incurring losses of up to £105m over a rolling three-year period and last Sunday, June 20, signalled the end of the latest cycle of profit and sustainability.

The Magpies were struggling to trade players to ensure they did not fall foul of the rules and thankfully the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, as well as the compensation fee agreed for former sporting director Dan Ashworth to join Manchester United, helped them fill that gap.

And while Newcastle were relieved not to sell any of their key players, the fallout from the Gordon saga will need to be managed carefully. United will not want to sell a player who was named their Player of the Season last season, but reports earlier this week suggested Gordon’s head had been turned by Liverpool’s interest.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds will return with renewed interest in Gordon, but bookmakers are tipping them to sign Gordon before the transfer deadline.

BetVictor are offering odds of just 5/4 on Gordon moving to Anfield, while they have also given Chelsea, who tried to sign the England international two years ago, odds of just 4/1 to make a move for him this summer.

Interestingly, a transfer to any German club is priced at 6/1, while transfers to clubs in Spain, Italy or France can be backed at 12/1. Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United are all priced at 16/1, while Man City have been given an outside price of 20/1.

Gordon, who registered 12 goals and 11 assists for Newcastle last season, is currently part of England’s EURO 2024 squad.
