Liverpool hero and Manchester United icon scored some of the greatest goals of all time

Jose Luis Chilavert’s ears will be burning as it’s time to talk about the greatest goals scored by goalkeepers. Liverpool and Manchester United are mentioned.

Peter Schmeichel vs Everton, 2001
The great Dane was playing for Villa and went up for a corner, as is traditional. What was untraditional was the goalkeeper finding himself at the back post and volleying home a first-time shot from the corner of the six-yard box.

Since he scored a goal from the edge, you might have thought he would be mad, but he just runs back like he didn’t do anything.

Paul Robinson v Watford, 2007
The Spurs goalkeeper takes a free kick from the left of his own penalty area, down the touchline. It’s a powerful shot that goes over everyone’s heads, bounces once and goes past Ben Foster, the keeper, who misjudged it, and into the net. No wonder Watford are relegated.

Pat Jennings v Manchester United, 1967
Pat scored perhaps the first televised goalkeeper goal in the 1967 Charity Shield game at Old Trafford, which ended 3-3. It was for Spurs. Pat fired the ball out of his hands in what is easily the highest and longest shot you will ever see. It bounced once about 20 yards from the box, went high over Alex Stepney’s head and into the goal. Cue handshakes all around.

Jimmy Glass vs Plymouth, 1999
He was only on loan at Carlisle. There were 10 seconds left. It was the last minute of the last game of the season and Carlisle were falling apart. A corner from the right fell to Glass and he slammed it in from six yards. Pitch invasion and everyone was furious.

He only played twice more for them, also scoring six goals in two consecutive weeks playing as a striker in the Bournemouth Sunday League. He retired from professional football at the age of 27 and became an IT salesman.

Alisson Becker vs West Brom, 2021
Liverpool’s No. 1 scored a header
from a corner taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold, the first goal scored by a Liverpool goalkeeper. It was a late winner by a £66 million man to make it 2-1.

Tim Howard v Bolton, 2012
Everyone’s favourite Tourette’s sufferer receives the ball in his box, impressively kicks it off the deck so that it bounces in front of the D, then over Adam Bogdan’s head and into the net. I suspect it was windy. Bolton and their manager, Owen Coyle of the Premier League and Airdrie were relegated that season.

Asmir Begovic v Southampton, 2013
The Stoke man became only the fifth goalkeeper to score a Premier League goal, netting from 97.5 yards against Southampton after 13 seconds, also setting the world record for the longest goal scored in football at the time.

The funny thing about this is best seen from behind the goal. As the ball is passed back to him, Saints goalkeeper Artur Boruc is standing in front of his box and while the ball is in the air he clearly thinks his defence will clear it, only for it to bounce twice, past him and into the net. Stupid.

Jose Luis Chilavert vs River Plate, 1996
The Paraguayan was a great specialist in set pieces. Here he takes a shot from the back of the center circle and launches a perfect shot that falls from the sky like a meteor towards the goal, still traveling at speed.

Jose Luis Chilavert vs Belgrano, 2000
Another extraordinary hit from about 40 yards or maybe even more. He drives it into the corner without it bouncing until it is over the line. It is not just a lucky hit; he was a specialist who did not score tap-ins, and one of the best goalkeepers of the 1990s, to begin with.

Joe Hart vs Roma, 2015
This was in the International Champions Cup in Australia, a penalty shootout that City won 5-4 after a 2-2 draw. It was a joke of a tournament. Joe and his impossibly long neck, probably because there was nothing on it, stands nonchalantly on the spot and with little running casually slams the ball into the roof of the net as if it were nothing. It was said to be like a goal kick. He should have taken more.

Leandro Requena vs Colo-Colo, 2023
The Argentine player scored his team Cobresal’s third goal in a 3-1 win in Chile. It was a 101-yard shot over everyone’s heads, past a dozing goalkeeper who was standing outside the box. As such, when it rolled into the goal, it was a new world record.
