Jealous ex-boyfriend admits to stabbing ex-partner to death in front of her children

A jealous ex-boyfriend has admitted stabbing his ex-partner to death in front of her children in a fit of cocaine and drink-fuelled rage.

Hafiz Sharifi, 29, stabbed Suvekshya Burathoki, 32 – known as Fatima – at her home in Leicester on October 8 last year.

Police rushed to her property on Bartholomew Street, near the city centre, at 8.30am but despite desperate attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A mother of three from Nepal died from multiple stab wounds.

At the time of her death, friends said she was caring for her two sons, aged nine and seven, and her three-year-old daughter.

After stabbing her to death, Sharifi fled the scene on foot but was arrested two days later in Coventry.

He admitted to police that he had been drinking and also used cocaine the night before Ms Burathoki was murdered.

On Friday, Sharifi, of no fixed address, admitted murder at Leicester Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Mark Sinski, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) major crime team, said: “This was a brutal and violent murder which has left residents of a busy street in shock.

“According to the people we spoke to during the investigation, Fátima was very well-known and incredibly well-liked by those who knew her.

“Sharifi could not face his actions – he knew he was wanted – and tried to hide.”

Detective Inspector Sinski added: “I hope Fatima’s family can take comfort in the fact that he pleaded guilty to her murder today.

“It also means that those who would have had to give evidence in what would undoubtedly have been an emotional trial will not have to do so.

“My thoughts and condolences remain with Fatima’s family and loved ones.”

A friend of Ms Burathoki said: “She had two boys from a previous relationship and a girl from her current relationship.

“She was a Tamil who converted to Islam.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard she was dead.

“She was an amazing mother who took care of her children and fed them well.”

Sharifi was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on February 21.
