UAB Blazers look to prove themselves ahead of 2024 season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Fall camp continues for the UAB football program as the Blazers look to bounce back from a 4-8 season last year and try to make something happen in the postseason.

Blazers starting quarterback Jacob Zeno spoke at practice Monday at the Football Operations Center on the UAB campus about how the team failed to finish strong in the second half of games last season. Zeno believes this year’s offense will be explosive and attack every inch of the football field.

“You can see the difference between this year and last year,” Zeno said. “Everyone is hungry, everyone is trying to do better. We are here working every day, trying to get better.”

UAB held its first fall camp practice at Protective Stadium last weekend. Coach Trent Dilfer said he wanted to see his team not only strong in the weight room, but he wanted to see his players play and finish strong in every rep on the field.

He was impressed with what he saw in the team’s first training session.

“It was evident on defense, shedding blocks, on offense, finishing, and it was evident in the strength of the runners after the catch, or handing off the ball,” Dilfer said. “It was evident in the tight end play. So it was evident in a lot of different areas, and that’s what impressed me the most.”

Fan Day is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, for Blazers fans at the Football Operations Center. The event begins at 2 p.m. and is free to the public. UAB kicks off its football season on August 29 at Protective Stadium, which hosts Alcorn State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
