Newcastle push for Marc Guehi transfer with new record bid submitted to Crystal Palace

Marc Guehi has agreed to join Newcastle United in what could become a record-breaking transfer, but the England international has had to be patient as the clubs negotiate a deal.

Newcastle had a bid turned down but are now in talks over a £60million transfer after making a new offer to Guehi’s current club Crystal Palace.

The Magpies have spent a large part of the transfer window looking to sign centre-backs. Injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, which are expected to extend into the season, have meant that more depth is needed at St James’ Park this season.

Newcastle got Lloyd Kelly through the door early on a free transfer, beating the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham to the former Bournemouth defender.

And the Magpies are now the big favourites and have a clear chance of Gehi which has been watched by big teams in England and Europe in recent months.

TEAMtalk sources previously revealed that Crystal Palace defender Guehi says yes to joining Newcastleahead of teams like Liverpool and Arsenal.

It’s not completely done yet, however, as Newcastle and Palace need to agree terms for the defender. The latest offer for Guehi is believed to be much closer to Palace’s valuation of their star defender and sources have made it clear that they will not budge on their £60m asking price.

Newcastle’s biggest ever outlay was for Alexander Isak, who cost £63million. It is likely that once everything is taken into account, the deal for the 24-year-old defender will represent a new record outlay for the St James’ Park side.

If that is the case, he could equal or even break the record for the most expensive transfer fee paid by Newcastle. In any case, the Magpies will be doing everything they can to ensure they secure a deal, having priced him ahead of some of the Premier League’s bigger clubs.

Guehi played 29 times for Crystal Palace last season, taking his total appearances for the club since joining from Chelsea in 2021 to 111.

He was a regular starter for England when available during their run to the Euro 2024 final.

And having signed Guehi from Chelsea, where he came through the ranks, TEAMtalk can confirm that Palace are eyeing another Blues academy product, Trevoh Chalobah, as a potential replacement.

Chalobah has been ruled out by Chelsea but could remain in London as he is now on Palace’s shortlist.
