Charlotte FC have opened negotiations with Newcastle to sign Paraguayan winger Miguel Almiron.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) side are managed by former Aston Villa, Leicester and Brentford manager Dean Smith.

Almiron spent two seasons in MLS with Atlanta United, where he won the MLS Cup, before joining Newcastle for a then club record fee of around £20 million in January 2019.

He scored 30 goals in 209 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions.

The Magpies are believed to be open to selling Almiron, who has previously been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

The MLS secondary transfer window closes on August 14.

Charlotte also signed former Fulham defender Tim Ream last week.
