Ipswich join two Premier League clubs in race for Kalvin Phillips to end Man City nightmare

Kalvin Phillips could be offered an escape by Man City before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

talkSPORT understands that Ipswich are the latest Premier League club interested in signing the 28-year-old.

Fulham and Everton have also been considered as possible destinations.

The former England international is desperate to rebuild his career after a difficult period at Man City.

Phillips signed for Man City in July 2022 on a six-year deal worth £42.5m.

Despite the initial positive impact, upon his return from the World Cup in December 2022, manager Pep Guardiola said Phillips was overweight. A few months later, Guardiola apologised.

He joined West Ham on a six-month loan in January but struggled with fitness and any permanent return was ruled out.

His loan spell reached its lowest point in March during a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Hammers were leading 3-1 but Phillips conceded a penalty shortly after coming on as a substitute.

He was seen after the game giving the middle finger to West Ham fans as they taunted him.

A fresh start at newly-promoted Ipswich could be welcomed by Phillips.

Phillips, who was an unused substitute in last weekend’s Community Shield triumph, has been dropped into defence to gain minutes during pre-season.

“He is a central midfielder but I have said many times that Kalvin likes to see the whole game ahead of him,” Guardiola said.

“When he’s in the middle surrounded by players, he struggles a bit. But he’s helped us a lot in the last few games of the tour. I should have seen that sooner. His confidence is back.”

Guardiola previously admitted: “I know Kalvin when he gets the ball and can see the whole pitch in front of him, he is a very good player. When he has small spaces, there are more problems.

“That’s why with the problems we have he makes an incredible effort with his position. He was confident with the ball and helps us a lot.”
