Third tower crane arrives on site for Bristol Airport public transport transformation project

The third and final tower crane has arrived at the Griffiths Farrans JV site at Bristol Airport, where the main contractors are delivering a transformative public transport project.

Work is progressing well, with the structure now visible above ground. Level one and two slabs are underway and all stair cores are progressing ahead of the floor slabs.

The new Public Transport Interchange at Bristol Airport will feature an improved internal road system and an additional multi-storey car park which will provide customer improvements such as lounges and rest facilities.

The project is part of Bristol Airport’s multi-million pound transformational development plan, enabling 12 million passengers a year to use the airport.

Andrew Goodenough, Director of Infrastructure at Bristol Airport, said:

“Bristol Airport is investing £60 million in our new Public Transport Interchange and associated works, to help increase the use of public transport at the Airport and transform the customer experience.

“The project is progressing quickly and we are excited to utilize the facility next summer.

“We are proud to increase opportunities for local employment, internships and spending in the local economy. Key to our development is sustainability, which is why we are recycling over 95% of the material on site, and we are keen to ensure we minimise the impacts on our local communities.”

Ian Grimstead, Chief Operating Officer at Griffiths Farrans JV, said:

“We are delighted to report that construction of the new multi-storey car park at Bristol Airport is making excellent progress. Our dedicated team is working diligently to ensure all key milestones are met. Significant earthmoving operations have been completed on the programme to enable construction of the car park to commence. Our team has aligned with Bristol Airport’s sustainability goals and has successfully processed 80,000 tonnes of material gained on site for reuse on the scheme. In addition, we were the first to trial the UK’s first 22T electric excavator in earthmoving operations with Volvo. We look forward to the completion of the scheme and the positive impact it will have on airport operations.”

Glenn Gilmore, Regional Director, Griffiths Farrans JV, said:

“Our project team is making excellent progress on site at Bristol Airport and now that work is taking place above ground, passengers arriving at the airport will be able to see each new level being added. Milestones like this provide our local stakeholders with confidence that work is underway and progressing rapidly. We are currently on programme and looking forward to more settled weather over the summer to continue with our planned timelines.”
