Girls Aloud joins Olly Alexander for ‘The Loving Kind’ and ‘King’ at Brighton Pride

Girls Aloud brought out Olly Alexander to sing ‘The Loving Kind’ and ‘King’ at Brighton Pride yesterday (August 3).

The reformed girl group took to the stage in glittering gold outfits at Preston Park in Brighton on the first day of the seaside city’s annual Pride event, which attracted an estimated 300,000 attendees.

Alexander joined them for their first performance of ‘The Loving Kind’ since 2009, while they later joined to perform the Eurovision alum’s hit ‘King’. They also covered Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ and added ‘Watch Me Go’ back to the setlist for the first time since 2006.

Girls Aloud’s performance at Brighton Pride follows their extensive reunion tour, which marked their first live performances in 10 years. It was also their first shows since the death of member Sarah Harding, who passed away in 2021 due to breast cancer.

The tour featured numerous tributes to Harding. During a cover of The Pretenders’ 1994 hit “I’ll Stand By You”, audio of Harding’s vocals was featured, with the remaining members of the group singing backing vocals.

“When we were putting the show together, there was a bit of Sarah singing this song by herself. Singing it amazingly and when we all heard it, we were like, ‘Wow,’ she should have sung it all by herself the whole time. So she’s doing it tonight,” Coyle said, introducing ‘I’ll Stand By You.’ “We’re doing a duet with Sarah tonight. It’s going to be us, Sarah, you. We’re going to do it together.”

During the last song of the night, ‘The Promise’, Harding appeared on a video screen singing her solo. The girls stopped midway through to watch footage of Sarah singing the song alone.

During the Newcastle show, however, Cheryl Tweedy was nearly “pulled off the stage” by a fan.
