The Hoops kick off the Scottish Premiership season later this afternoon when Kilmarnock come to Parkhead. The league flag will be unfurled as the Bhoys look to start flying.

Maintaining domestic dominance is of paramount importance for Rodgers and Co. this year as they finally make their mark in Europe.

In fact, the coach spoke to his players on Saturday to discuss their main objectives for the new season.

The Irishman was asked about the targets at Friday’s press conference. “That’s something we’ll talk about beforehand, it’s part of my presentation tomorrow,” he said (Celtic FC on YouTube).

“At Celtic, a lot of these things are self-explanatory really. You have three trophies domestically and four big challenges. Winning those is the target, and the Champions League target is to qualify for the play-offs at the end of January.

“There will be other small goals that I will talk to the players about individually in terms of their personal goals and how they can improve.”

After winning a domestic double on his return to Scottish football, Rodgers has made it clear he wants a treble this time around.

The league is what matters most, but re-establishing Celtic’s status as the dominant force in Scottish football is paramount for the manager, as is competing on the continental stage.

Celts have long underperformed on the European stage, but the new Champions League format could change things; right-back Alistair Johnston thinks it is an “unbelievable opportunity” for him and his team-mates.

The draw for the league stage takes place at the end of the month, but the Celts’ full focus now is on Flag Day and getting the league season off to a flying start.
