A low-key coastal village offers a charming beach without the tourist crowds seen in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset.

New Brighton, on the northern edge of Birkenhead and Wallasey in Merseyside, is acclaimed by visitors for its stunning views of the Irish Sea and rich maritime history.

Built in 1820 to defend Liverpool’s port, it became a bustling seaside resort at the turn of the century, boasting swimming pools, a promenade, a ballroom and a host of other amenities.

People flock to the seaside town to this day to admire Fort Perch Rock, the former 19th-century sea defense that hosts an escape room challenge, and to enjoy a variety of traditional entertainment.

The postcard-perfect Perch Rock Lighthouse also provides a stunning view at sunset.

Shoppers also flock to the £80 million Marine Point leisure and retail facility, one of The Wirral’s main attractions. There you’ll find a hotel, an eight-screen cinema and several restaurants and bars.

Inland, Victoria Road and Victoria Parade are home to a number of independent bars, cafes and restaurants, with antique and vintage shops on Seabank Road.

TripAdviser reviewers also praised the unique Fairy Village at Vale Park as perfect for young children.

Major and Sue Mace, a couple who live in the park, were involved in the creation of the Black Pearl, a community-built ship that attracted visitors in droves before disappearing due to damage over time.

After this project, the duo decided to reuse leftover wood from the project to create a lovely fairy glen.

It has since become a huge fairy settlement that attracts visitors from all over Merseyside.

New Brighton is also home to the Wirral’s largest theatre, the Floral Pavillion, which hosts local and visiting shows, meaning there is something for everyone.

This year, the area held its second annual Summer Festival from July 25-28, featuring a fun fair, games, a food village, a pet village and more.

The nostalgic village is just a 15-minute train ride from Liverpool, making it a quick and easy getaway for those craving sea air and old-world charm.
