Arne Slot trialling ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool star in a brand new position in training

Arne Slot trialling ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool star in a brand new position in training

Arne Slot is reportedly trying out one of Liverpool’s star players in a new role in training sessions out in the United States.

The Reds are in full pre-season mode after kicking off their tour of America with a 1-0 win against Real Betis, with youngsters Trey Nyoni, Vitezslav Jaros and Ben Doak all impressing against the La Liga side in Pittsburgh.

With big ties against Arsenal and Manchester United coming up for Liverpool, Slot is using his time wisely on the training pitch to get his new squad up to scratch physically as well as adapting them to his tactical ideology.

And one player could be set for a new role next season under Slot.

Dominik Szoboszlai being played as a wide-man in Liverpool training

According to the Daily Mail, Dominik Szoboszlai is being used in training as a wide-forward, a position the Hungarian international is yet to play for Liverpool since joining last year from RB Leipzig.

Lauded by Harvey Elliott as an ‘unbelivable’ player, Szoboszlai is no stranger to playing out on the wing having played on both the left and the right during his time with Leipzig and RB Salzburg.

And with Slot seemingly keen on reshaping the Liverpool midfield and attack for next season, shifting Szoboszlai out into a wide position could open the door for some interesting ideas for the Dutch coach.

Furthermore, the Hungarian being used on the wing could hint towards Szoboszlai being viewed by Slot as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, with the 23-year-old arguably best suited to playing out on the right rather than on the left.

Szoboszlai as Salah’s replacement could be a stroke of genius

Although Szoboszlai has played more out on the left throughout his career, the former Bundesliga star has succeeded with the limited game time the youngster has had on the right with Leipzig and Salzburg.

And for Liverpool, experimenting with Szoboszlai as a right-winger could open the door for the Hungary captain to one day replace Salah, with the Anfield no. 11 potentially heading into his final year with the Reds.

Whilst central midfield might still be Szoboszlai’s best position next season, a few minutes out on the right to replace Salah could be worth the investment, and the former Leipzig star could have what it takes to replace the Liverpool legend in the years to come.
