Lassithi is the easternmost regional unit of the island of Crete, east of Heraklion. Thanks to its beaches and mild climate all year round, it attracts many tourists. Particularly important for many tourists this summer, it allows you to avoid the crowds that have invaded many popular European destinations and the protesters that come with them.

It is home to a number of ancient ruins, including the Minoan sites of Vasiliki, Pyrgos and Gournia and the Dorian cities of Lato and Itanos.

“If you’re looking to escape the crowds this summer, Lassithi is a fantastic holiday spot, offering a laid-back, authentic Greek experience, at very reasonable prices too,” said travel experts at eurochange.

Airbnbs in the area are available for £60 a night, and direct flights to Crete are available from Edinburgh, Birmingham and Newcastle airports from £162 in August. Average meal costs around 21 euros, or £16.32, while a beer sells for an average of three euros, or £2.33.

“Lassithi’s coastline is much less developed and often more isolated than Mallorca’s, so you don’t have to worry about finding a secluded spot to sunbathe.

The unique Vai beach boasts a picturesque palm forest, the largest in Europe with over 5,000 trees. Opposite the forest is a clean, golden sand beach with a clear blue sea. There are also snack bars and cafes to prepare you for a full day of swimming and relaxing.

Meanwhile, the popular Elounda beach overlooks Spinalonga Island, located just under seven miles from Lasithi’s capital, Agios Nikolaos. The beach is well-organized, with sun loungers, umbrellas and water sports on a sandy shore.

“This region is also a must-visit for food lovers, as some of the best Greek products are made here, including olive oil and honey. Try visiting one of its many olive oil farms to really immerse yourself in some authentic Greek culture.”

Among Tripadvisor’s top picks were MamaLukia and Lotzeta Restaurant, offering local cuisine including lamb dishes, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Similarly, Olondi has plenty of seafood options and was described by one as “the best place in Crete”.

Laura Evans-Fisk, Head of Digital and Engagement at eurochange, commented: “Mallorca is understandably one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

“However, it may not be the safest time to visit this summer, so to avoid fueling the overtourism problem there, we wanted to share some similar vacation spots that are equally beautiful and offer the same historic charm.”
