Newcastle United faces Manchester United for Chido Obi-Martin

Newcastle United are set to compete with Manchester United for 16-year-old Danish goalscorer Chido Obi-Martin, with Arsenal keen to keep him at the north London club.

According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chido Obi-Martin is the subject of Newcastle United’s interest. The Magpies are competing with Manchester United and several other clubs to sign the 16-year-old goal machine, who is looking to leave Arsenal and embark on a new adventure in the summer transfer window.

However, a report from Football Insider has suggested that the Gunners are hopeful of securing an agreement with the Dane over a professional contract, which he could sign after turning 17 in November. However, time is running out for Arsenal to keep hold of the youngster amid his links with Manchester United and Newcastle United.

Who is Chido Obi-Martin?

Chido Obi-Martin is the brightest young prospect to represent Arsenal in age-group football since Bukayo Saka. Originally from Glostrup, the 16-year-old has spent the majority of his formative years so far in his homeland before joining Arsenal from FC Copenhagen two years ago.

The Danish goal machine is in a league of his own in age-group football and racked up 32 goals and three assists in 18 U18 Premier League appearances last season. Meanwhile, in October 2023, Obi-Martin came into the spotlight after scoring ten goals in an U16 match against Liverpool. However, he is likely to leave Arsenal amid his links with Manchester United and Newcastle United, although the Gunners are hoping to secure a deal for him.

A boy in demand

Manchester United’s interest in Chido Obi-Martin comes as no surprise. The Red Devils are constantly scouring the market for the brightest young prospects and have a rich history of paving a clear path to first-team football for promising prodigies, with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo being the most recent examples. So the 16-year-old goal machine is a viable target for Manchester United.

As for Newcastle United, they have focused on signing bright young prospects since the PIF-led takeover a few years ago. The Magpies recently signed Miodrag Pivas from FK Jedinstvo Bijelo Polje. Obi-Martin has now emerged as a viable target for Newcastle United.

Furthermore, other well-known clubs like AS Monaco, Bayern Munich, and Eintracht Frankfurt are interested in the 16-year-old Danish goal machine. So, it will be interesting to see where the youngster will play next season.
