Scotland under-21 hockey team aim for gold in Türkiye

Scotland’s Under-21s take to the field for Saturday’s EuroHockey II final against Ukraine buoyed by a 4-0 win over hosts Turkey in their final Group A match.

The Tartan Harts dominated the game early on but were unable to convert territory into goals. Lexie McMillan (Uddingston) came closest but was only denied by a goal-line save and it was not until the third quarter that Scotland made the difference.

And it was Ava Wadsworth, who plays for Durham University, who scored on the rebound from a corner.

Scotland added three more goals in the final quarter: Ava Smith (University of Edinburgh) grabbed the second goal after a fluid move involving several players, Mhairi Low (Loughborough University) added the third goal after a pass and Keira Foster (Loughborough University) completed the scoring.

Scotland’s aim now is to win the final, which would secure a place in the Junior World Cup and coach Jimmy Culnane (pictured centre by Nigel Duncan) led the Scots to a 3-1 victory over Ukraine in the opening match of the competition in Konya.

Scotland topped the group with nine points, Ukraine were second with four and the Scots had a goal difference of plus seven to Ukraine’s plus one.

Poland finished third in the group and will face Turkey in the third-fourth place play-off. The hosts have failed to pick up a single point so far.
