General Election LIVE as Glasgow voters prepare to go to the polls on July 4

General Election LIVE as Glasgow voters prepare to go to the polls on July 4

Voters are preparing to head to the polls tomorrow, Thursday, July 4, to elect members of Congress across the country.

Conservative MP and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Labour’s Keir Starmer and Anas Sarwar, along with the SNP’s John Swinney and the Liberal Democrat and Green parties, have been campaigning since the dissolution of Parliament on 30 May.

In Glasgow, voters will select MPs from six constituencies in the city to represent in Westminster.

Since 2015, when it won several seats in the city, the SNP has been the dominant party after years of Labour success.

A Labour MP was elected in 2017 – when Paul Sweeney narrowly defeated Anne McLaughlin in Glasgow North East – but in the 2019 vote the SNP won all seven of the city’s constituencies.

The boundary changes mean Glasgow now has six electoral wards: Glasgow East, Glasgow North, Glasgow North East, Glasgow West, Glasgow South and Glasgow South West.

Our live blog will keep you updated today and throughout voting day, Thursday 4 July. We will be updating LIVE from the Glasgow count, overnight and into the early hours of 5 July as the results are announced.

The six Glasgow constituencies that represent voters in Westminster

The boundary changes mean Glasgow now has six electoral wards: Glasgow East, Glasgow North, Glasgow North East, Glasgow West, Glasgow South and Glasgow South West.

The Glasgow Central constituency has been abolished. Alison Thewliss, who was the SNP MP for Glasgow Central, is seeking election in Glasgow North, where Patrick Grady is not standing again.

All the other SNP MPs elected in 2019 — David Linden, Anne McLaughlin, Stewart McDonald, Chris Stephens and Carol Monaghan — are hoping to regain their seats.
