Major west London road to be partially closed for nearly 3 months from this weekend

One of London’s busiest roads will be partially closed from Sunday 21 July until mid-October for “critical safety maintenance work”, Transport for London (TfL) has warned. The A40 Westway in West London will be partially closed from 10pm on Sunday.

TfL says the structures that carry the Wood Lane viaduct to the Marylebone viaduct date back 55 years, from 1969, and are reaching the end of their useful life. Therefore, TfL says: “They require critical safety maintenance to ensure they remain safe and can continue to serve Londoners for decades to come.”

During the works, TfL will replace four joints supporting the A40 access roads. Two separate phases of work will be carried out, which are described in full later in this story.

Routes around the A40 will be extremely busy during the works, TfL has warned. Drivers should plan ahead and use alternative routes if possible.

Works will be paused during Notting Hill Carnival as TfL vows to minimise disruption. Stuart Harvey, TfL’s Chief Capital Officer, said: “We are determined to ensure that a safe and well-maintained road network can play a key role in enabling Londoners to travel around the capital.

“These ageing 1960s structures are reaching the end of their useful life and road closures are essential if we are to ensure they can continue to serve Londoners for decades to come. We recognise that these closures will have a significant impact on people travelling in the area and we are working hard to minimise disruption as much as possible, including by rescheduling other works and reviewing traffic signals.

“I would like to thank the people of the region for their patience and encourage everyone to plan ahead for any trips to the region.”
