Newcastle United chief executive Darren Eales has outlined the club’s stance on Anthony Gordon’s future as he continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool. As reported by the ECHO, the Reds were last month offered the opportunity to sign the former Everton striker ahead of the PSR deadline of June 30.

The ECHO understands Newcastle have asked for Jarell Quansah as part of a deal that would take Gordon to Anfield, which has proved to be a sticking point. Liverpool, however, have no plans to lose Quansah this summer, or indeed at any point in the near future, following his successful season.

Liverpool, however, are still admirers of the England international, who could be sold by the Magpies this summer despite becoming a key player in Eddie Howe’s side. And now that Euro 2024 has come to an end, Gordon’s future at Newcastle is once again under the spotlight.

However, addressing the speculation on Tuesday, Newcastle CEO Darren Eales insisted his club intend to keep Gordon this summer and claimed he is a “key” member of Eddie Howe’s squad, along with Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

“In the end we had to do the deals that were right for the club (PSR in terms), that made us complacent,” he told Chronicle Live. “So from that perspective we did what we had to do.

“But we have kept what I would say are our main players, the type of players like Isak, Gordon, Bruno, Joelinton – those players who are our core.

“Now it’s a case of OK, with this new cycle ahead of us now, how can we look to strengthen? How can we look to go to the next level?”

Eales was also asked categorically whether Gordon would remain a Newcastle player beyond this summer. The Magpies CEO responded by stating: “Yes!”
