Mark Wood to replace retired James Anderson for Nottingham Test | West Indies tour of England, 2024

Anderson is still part of the England squad, having taken on the role of bowling coach immediately after his retirement.

England have named one change to their playing XI for the second Test of the three-match series against West Indies. Mark Wood will come in for James Anderson, who retired after the Lord’s Test, bringing an end to his 188-Test career.

Wood infuses England’s fearsome pace attack. He featured in the last Test before this series, playing the Dharamsala Test against India in March. However, he has not played a red-ball match this season, skipping the ongoing County Championship to rest after England’s T20 World Cup campaign.

Anderson is still part of the England set-up, having taken on the role of bowling coach immediately after his retirement. The 41-year-old picked 4/58 in England’s innings victory at Lord’s. England bowled out the West Indies for 121 and 136, taking less than 90 overs in both innings combined. Gus Atkinson was awarded Player of the Match on his debut, picking 12/106.

Atkinson and Wood are the fastest bowlers on the county circuit.

Wood was added to the Test squad after the first Test. Meanwhile, Matthew Potts (six Tests) and Dillon Pennington (yet to debut) will continue to warm the bench after originally being picked for the first two Tests.

The rest of the XI is the same. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir did not bowl in the first Test but retains his place for Trent Bridge.

England’s starting XI in Nottingham:

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (week), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir
