Abdul Fatawu signs 5-year deal with Leicester City after impressive loan spell

Leicester City Football Club have announced the permanent signing of “exciting young winger” Abdul Fatawu from Sporting Lisbon for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old Ghanaian international impressed on loan at the King Power Stadium last season, helping City win the Sky Bet Championship title and promotion to the Premier League, and has now signed a five-year contract with the club.

Abdul made 43 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, including his first career hat-trick in a 5-0 win against Southampton at Filbert Way. He quickly established himself as a favourite among the Blue Army.

“I feel amazing. It’s so good to be back and I’m back to focus again on next season. I feel so motivated to be in the Premier League,” Fatawu said.

“It’s something new for me. I’m going to work hard for it, with the team. I can’t wait to see (my teammates).”

I missed them so much. They are like family now. I didn’t think I would miss some of them, but when I left, I missed them so much! I can’t wait to see them.”

Born in the Ghanaian city of Tamale, Fatawu began his senior career with Steadfast FC, where his impressive performances earned him a loan move to Ghana Premier Division side Dreams FC in October 2021.

The talented winger, considered one of his country’s brightest prospects, continued his fine form before joining Sporting Lisbon in April 2022.

He made his professional debut for the Portuguese side against Rio Ave in August 2022 and featured in their UEFA Champions League campaign that season.

Fatawu found international success in March 2021 when he helped Ghana’s under-20 team win the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, where he was named player of the tournament.
