Parks around Glasgow have been named among the best in the UK, including the hidden gem in the Gorbals

The UK’s stunning parks and green spaces chosen for this year’s prestigious Green Flag Awards have been named.

And as expected, there are plenty of them to be found in and around Glasgow, including a hidden gem in the Gorbals.

This year, the Southern Necropolis, which is in the Gorbals and should not be confused with the larger Necropolis near the High Street, was highlighted in the special community awards which celebrate community-led green spaces.

The cemetery was built in 1840 and has become a popular spot for dog walkers and families to take a stroll in good weather. Atmospheric and beautiful, it was also the setting for the famous Gorbals Vampire case, when hundreds of Glasgow children descended on the cemetery to hunt an unlikely monster in the 1950s.

Other winners for Glasgow include Overnewton Park in Yorkhill, which also won a community award for being child-friendly and showcasing biodiversity, Glasgow Botanic Gardens and Whitelee wind farm.

2,227 parks and green spaces have received the Green Flag Award – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces – from world-famous urban parks to community gardens.

Parks are a vitally important part of the nation’s green infrastructure, providing opportunities to improve physical and mental health, even in the most urbanized environments.

That’s why it’s important that parks are managed according to the Green Flag Award standard, which rewards places that meet community needs, are well-maintained, safe and offer people the opportunity to lead healthy lifestyles.
