George Clooney arrives in Edinburgh and poses for selfies with fans

Hollywood star George Clooney mingled with fans as he arrived in Edinburgh.

The Oscar-winning star, looking dapper in a dark grey suit and black sweater, appeared in the capital to meet with heads of several charities including the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Clooney and his wife Amal are no strangers to the capital.

They previously visited Edinburgh in 2019 to receive the prestigious Postcode Hero awards in recognition of their work to safeguard human rights.

The couple founded The Clooney Foundation for Justice, a human rights charity, in 2016.

On Tuesday, Mr Clooney arrived in Edinburgh city centre and spent time with fans who had gathered in the street to welcome him.

Many posed for selfies before he walked onto the red carpet laid out for him.

The Ocean’s Eleven actor paused to chat with well-wishers ahead of his appointments, some of whom took selfies.

The 63-year-old has previously supported good causes in the city by lending his high-profile support to charities such as Social Bite, a cafe that employs, feeds and raises money for homeless people.

It has since become a movement to end homelessness.

The charity and social enterprise provides homes, jobs, food and support to empower people to transform their own lives.

Social Bite’s profile was hugely boosted as the humble cafe attracted high-profile support – welcoming Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Princess of Wales and more.

The Ocean’s Eleven star was the first major celebrity to visit the site.

In his role as co-founder of the human rights charity Clooney Foundation for Justice, the former Emergency Room actor spoke at Littlejohn’s Scottish Business Awards in 2015.

Littlejohn asked if the star would stop by Social Bite on the way to the event.

“We were told he would love it,” Littlejohn recalled last year. “We really had a great time with George Clooney. Most of all, he was very funny, he has a great sense of humor.

“Obviously, cafes are populated by people from all backgrounds, including homeless people, and he was so generous with his time. He had no airs and graces, he was taking selfies with everyone.

“He was just a super-lovely guy and really didn’t mind all the craziness, the media attention and all that. I put that down to the fact that he didn’t become famous until he was in his thirties.

“So he was already fully formed when he became famous and now it seems like he just enjoys it and takes it all in stride.”

In 2018, Littlejohn built the Social Bite village, which provides accommodation and support for homeless people in Edinburgh.

His visit comes a week after he made a strong call for Joe Biden to drop out of the US presidential race.

The longtime Democratic supporter wrote in the New York Times: “We are not going to win in November with this president.”

Josh Littlejohn founded Social Bite as a small cafe in Edinburgh in 2012 with the simple aim of donating profits to charity.
