Plans to open Birmingham’s ‘biggest independent shop’ fall through as supporters say ‘I’m so sorry’

Plans to open Birmingham’s biggest independent bookshop have fallen through, according to an update from organisers. Green Heart Books was due to open on Greenfield Crescent in Edgbaston and would have been the largest of its kind in the city.

Called Bookshop On The Green when it closed in Bournville, the bookstore has raised more than £5,000 in a crowdfunding campaign to reopen as a 1,200 sq ft destination in Edgbaston. Initial plans revealed the space would be used for events and workshops, as well as a cafe and a space to find a good read.

The hope when the Crowdfunder was launched was to open on Wednesday, June 12, and updates on Green Heart Books’ social media pages showed construction on the space underway, including work that had been done to make the space accessible. It would be opened by booksellers Sarah Mullen and Peri Cimen, and applications for new job openings at the location had opened.

However, today (July 16), the bookshop announced it would no longer be opening. In a post, it stated: “Announcement of change of plans – PLEASE SHARE. It is with sadness that we have to share with you that we will no longer be opening our new bookshop in Edgbaston.

“This is due to circumstances beyond our control, as Sarah has recently been diagnosed with a serious long-term medical condition and is currently unfit to work. We understand this announcement is disappointing news, for which we apologise, but we thank everyone for their understanding.

Sarah will be reaching out directly to the people who so kindly supported our Crowdfunder. Best wishes, Sarah.”
