BBC’s Jason Mohammad ‘very proud’ as he takes on new job for the first time

BBC presenter Jason Mohammad has spoken of his pride at taking on his new role for the first time in his home city of Cardiff.

The host, who was born and raised in Ely, was appointed Pro Chancellor of Cardiff University earlier this year. In the ceremonial role, he acts as an advocate and ambassador for the university, helping to raise its profile on the national and international stage.

One of his responsibilities includes the university’s graduation ceremonies and, with the class of 2024 graduating this week, Mohammad said he was “very proud” to be part of this special day, more than 25 years after he left the university.

After studying Welsh and politics at Swansea University, the 50-year-old graduated from Cardiff’s renowned JOMEC (Journalism, Media and Culture) school in 1997 with a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism. Mohammad – who also led Departure of the day and the BBC’s Olympic coverage – he received an honorary degree from the university in 2014.

On Tuesday, he read the welcome speech at the journalism school’s graduation ceremony. Taking to Instagram beforehand, he told students they were about to begin “an incredible journey” and gave some advice for the future.

“A very proud day for many in my hometown,” Mohammad wrote. “Looking forward to my first ceremonial role as Pro Chancellor @cardiffuni. I will be reading the welcome speech at the @jomeccymraeg graduation ceremony.

“It’s incredible to think that I left that school in 1997 as a postgraduate and am now meeting the next generation of journalists and presenters. Congratulations to our fabulous students – this is the start of an incredible journey.

“I hope you have an amazing day with your family and friends,” he added. “And my advice – enjoy every second and soak up every moment. Cardiff is super proud of you. Pob lwc a mwynhewch!”
