Fun at the Stanley Park Summer Market

Fun at the Stanley Park Summer Market

One of Liverpool’s best-loved historic parks is getting its own weekly market over the summer holidays.

Grade II listed Stanley Park will host its first open-air market every Wednesday from 24 July to 4 September, from 9am to 3pm each week.

Located in the car park closest to the Liverpool Football Club stand on Anfield Road, around 50 stalls will be available selling a huge range of fashion, homeware, accessories, crafts and fresh produce. There will also be a dedicated area for delicious food and drinks.

In addition to the opportunity to purchase some locally sourced products, there will be a variety of information booths each week, giving visitors the opportunity to find out information on a variety of health or community-related topics.

Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Richard Kemp, will officially open the market on Wednesday 24 July.

This is the first weekday open-air retail market hosted by the City Council in several years, and it is hoped the seven-week trial will be a great success and can return at a later date to become a regular community activity.

This free market is the latest addition to Liverpool’s popular and well-established market offering, spread across the city – from the weekly Great Homer Street Market to the regular line-up of farmers and craft markets.

The announcement comes just weeks after St George’s Hall hosted a new market showcasing some of the best local independent businesses, attracting almost 3,000 people in just one day. It was so successful that two more dates have now been added to the schedule, with it returning on Sunday 6 October and Sunday 3 November.

Did you know…

The 154-year-old green lung of north Liverpool is situated between the world-famous Anfield and Goodison football stadiums.

Stanley Park is named after Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, former Mayor of Liverpool, first Chancellor of the University of Liverpool and founding chairman of the committee for the building of Liverpool Cathedral. As Governor General of Canada, he bequeathed the Stanley Cup to the hockey-loving nation.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:

“There is a real buzz around our markets offering at the moment. The Summer Market at St George’s Hall was a huge success and showed there is a real appetite from people to support small, local businesses.

“It’s always been our ambition to bring markets to as many locations as possible – they can be the heart of the local community, bringing together fresh produce, unique crafts and friendly faces. It’s a way to make neighbourhoods feel vibrant and connected – so mark the dates in your diary and we look forward to welcoming you to Stanley Park every Wednesday.”

Local market trader Terry Clarke said:

“We are looking forward to the opening of the new Stanley Park Market. There will be lots of top quality products at the lowest prices. Bargains for everyone!”

“We hope the people of Anfield and the surrounding area will come out and support us and make the market a success. In these times of austerity, the market is where you will get the most for your money. We look forward to seeing you on July 24.”
