Crysencio Summerville’s options dwindle as Leeds United face unexpected possibility

The tears had barely dried after Leeds United’s heartbreak at Wembley when the disappointment was outweighed by the expectation that Crysencio Summerville would leave the club this summer. The 24-year-old Dutchman lit up the Championship last season with his goals and performances en route to being crowned the division’s player of the year.

Leeds’ failure to return to the Premier League immediately opened the door for Summerville’s exit, with the player expected to have already walked through that door by now. And yet, with pre-season about to enter its second week and Leeds’ first game of the summer fast approaching, Summerville finds himself on familiar ground at Thorp Arch working with his Whites team-mates to prepare for the new campaign.

For all the talk of interest from the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United on these shores, and Paris St Germain across the Channel, only Brighton and Hove Albion have registered any firm interest in the player. Aston Villa have completed a deal for Hull City star winger Jaden Philogene for £13m due to a clause in the contract that sent him to Hull in the first place, ruling the Villains out of a move for Summerville.

Chelsea have added promising 17-year-old Brazilian Estevai Willian to their winger options for next season and have seemingly remained quiet about Summerville, but the latest update is the most interesting.

There are growing reports that Brighton have become frustrated with a stalemate in their approach to Summerville and have walked away from any potential deal, withdrawing their interest in the player. This would narrow down the list of potential moves and would mean there is currently no registered interest in Summerville.

Leeds are not in a position where they have to sell following the £40m deal that took Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur and they will play hardball should any interested parties emerge. There is still time for that to happen, but the lack of interest at the moment undoubtedly increases the chances of the winger still being at Leeds for the new season. It may only be a slim chance, but the chances of an exit are growing by the day.
