wetherspoon pubs closing A popular Leicester pub Wetherspoons could soon close so it can be expanded. Plans have been submitted to extend The High Cross on the High Street into an adjacent vacant shop.

The busy pub will also undergo a “complete refurbishment” if the proposals are approved by Leicester City Council’s planning team. A Wetherspoons spokesperson told Leicestershire Live that work was due to start on Monday 2 September, subject to planning permission. wetherspoon pub closures

The renovation space will need to close its doors to customers during part of the work. It was expected to close on Monday, Oct. 14, with a grand reopening planned for Tuesday, Nov. 5, the spokesperson said.

The work will include knocking down the wall separating the two buildings, removing two staircases and extending the shop into the rear courtyard. Plans suggest the newly expanded pub will also be redecorated with a new floor. wetherspoon pub closures

The store’s facade will also be refurbished, with proposals to remove roller blinds and work on the windows. It will be redecorated to match the facade of The High Cross. The entire work is expected to cost around £650,000, the company said.

Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “High Cross is a hugely popular pub. The investment in the refurbishment reflects our commitment to the pub, its customers and staff, and to Leicester itself.

Consultation on the scheme will run until Tuesday 13 August. Leicester City Council has set a target date for a decision: Tuesday 27 August.
