Nottingham’s ‘Santorini’ beach is taking shape in Old Market Square

Nottingham’s Santorini-themed beach has begun to take shape ready for a summer of fun – someone just needs to tell you the weather forecast. However, it looks like next week could heat up with the Met Office predicting a maximum temperature of 22°C on opening day, Wednesday 17 July.

Work is well underway at Old Market Square – the sand is there, but the pool has yet to be filled in. The beach hut bar is back in place and a new row of whitewashed benches is under construction.

Thrill seekers can soar on the 40m Skyflyer in front of the Council House, which is currently decked out in the Union Jack. This year’s event, organised by the Mellors Group, will not feature the giant inflatable slide.

In keeping with the Greek theme, a wooden stall will sell gyros, while fans with a sweet tooth can enjoy crepes filled with Nutella – and of course, it wouldn’t be a beach without ice cream.

Other attractions include bungee trampolines, hook a duck and bumper boats. Volleyball, salsa dancing and movie nights are also part of the program. Visitors will be entertained with live music at the beach bar from Thursday to Sunday.

Sunday 25 August, part of the bank holiday weekend, will be dedicated to a charity beach party in aid of the Little Ted Foundation. The beachfront will be open until Sunday 1 September.
