New interactive map shows London boroughs with the highest measles infections

More than 2,000 people – including 1,200 children – have been infected with measles since the current outbreak of the once-eradicated disease began. Seven boroughs in London have had more than 70 infections.

The World Health Organization declared the UK had eliminated measles in 2016 thanks to the success of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. But just two years later, that status was removed after a surge in cases.

Now – after vaccination rates have fallen across the country – England is facing its biggest measles outbreak in more than a decade.

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), there have been 2,049 laboratory-confirmed cases of measles since the current outbreak began in October in Birmingham.

Most of these cases (63 percent or 1,283) occurred in children 10 years of age or younger. Another 30 percent occurred in youth and adults 15 years of age or older (614 cases).

London has had more confirmed cases than any other region, with 740, followed by the West Midlands (663) and the East Midlands (176).

Separate figures show the UKHSA received notifications of 736 suspected measles cases from GPs in England and Wales last month alone.
