Devastation in Newry as traditional businesses ‘destroyed’ by fire

The fire occurred at Greenbank Industrial Estate in Ballinacraig.

Providing an update, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said crews were “still dealing with a significant fire” at the site.

“The public should avoid the area and homeowners should keep windows and doors closed.

“Please be advised that this incident is likely to continue overnight.”

NIFRS also acknowledged the contribution of farmers in the area who used slurry tanks to help fight the fire.

The fire is believed to have started at Formula Karting before spreading to other units in the industrial park.

One of these units was a furniture store called House of Murphy.

The owners said: “The House of Murphy family and staff are devastated following the recent events in which a fire destroyed our store in Greenbank, Newry.

“Please bear with us as we try to save and recover.

“Thanks a million to the emergency services and farmers who helped. We appreciate everything.

Chamber Chief Executive Michael Savage attended the scene on Saturday and offered the Chamber’s support to the affected family businesses and their loyal employees.

He said: “Our hearts go out to the long-standing family businesses affected by this fire.

“They are devastated by what has happened and worried about what will happen next and what the future holds for their team.

“I have offered my full support to the Chamber team and member businesses and will help in every way possible in the difficult days ahead.

“Our sincere thanks go to the fire crews for their efforts in fighting the fire and also to the local farmers who brought their water tankers to the scene and helped stop the spread of the fire.”

Sinn Fein councillor for Newry, Geraldine Kearns, said: “Significant fire at Greenbank Industrial Estate. Fire crew working on scene.

“Please avoid the area and keep windows closed. My thoughts are with everyone affected. Devastating.”

Earlier, a NIFRS spokesperson said there were six fire-fighting trucks and more than 50 personnel carrying out fire-fighting operations.

“We would like to advise the public to avoid the area where possible and nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed,” the statement added.

Traffic was at a standstill on Warrenpoint Carriageway and Kimorey Street. Motorists were warned to avoid the area.
