Manchester United legend set to return after Liverpool stint

Antonio Valencia is set for an emotional return to Old Trafford as he takes part in a charity game in September between Manchester United Legends and Celtic Legends.

The Ecuadorian played for United for 10 years, making over 300 appearances and winning numerous honours including two Premier League crowns, a pair of League Cups, a Europa League title and an FA Cup. He will share the pitch with other legends such as Dimitar Berbatov, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes under Bryan Robson. Assisting Robson would be none other than the prolific Andy Cole.

Opposite, preparing to challenge is a Celtic XI managed by Paul Lambert. Valencia, having played against Liverpool Legends at Old Trafford in 2022, expressed his delight at being given another opportunity to pull on the red shirt.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he told United’s official website. “Every time I get the invitation I make sure I’m there. It’s going to be fun seeing so many friends, the stadium and my old team-mates. I’m really looking forward to it. It was really great last time, an amazing game against a historic rival of ours and just being able to help the Foundation.

“That’s why I like coming to Manchester to support this, of course, because it’s a very hard job to do. What they’re doing for young people in the Manchester area, and elsewhere, I know how much work is needed.

“I was a UNICEF ambassador while I was in Manchester, and I bought my own foundation here in Ecuador. I try to help as many children as possible. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

On facing Celtic, he added: “I have a great memory of the Scottish people and how nice they are. Not just with my team-mates, not just at United but also at Wigan. And obviously especially with the boss – Sir Alex Ferguson. I’m really hoping it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
