Susan Calman discovers Nottingham’s ‘hidden treasure’ on Channel 5’s Grand Day Out

Channel Five viewers were treated to a new episode of Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out last night saw the bubbly host visit Nottinghamshire and find the city’s “hidden treasure”. The programme, which aired on Thursday 11 July, focused on Susan’s visit to Robin Hood’s country, which she described as “absolutely stunning”.

She began her visit at the statue of Robin Hood outside Nottingham Castle, before travelling to Sherwood Forest to learn more about the legendary outlaw and try her hand at archery. Then Susan returned to the city to search the largest network of caves in the UK.

Susan was visibly impressed with the network and said: “I’ve been to Nottingham a few times and had no idea this was here. It’s literally a hidden gem.”

She could be seen tiptoeing as her guide took her to a part of the cave that used to be a tannery, explaining that the network has the same heritage status as Stonehenge.

She said: “It’s like the pictures you see of tombs in Egypt, it must be a very important place.” Before adding: “It makes me want to buy a house in Nottingham, to see what’s underneath it.

“Nothing fancy, just a two up, two down, with an underground lair.” Susan then headed to the surface, where she went to the National Ice Centre to search for the next Torvil and Dean.

She described the bolero as “one of the greatest moments in sporting history”, as she shared with viewers how she used to dance along in her living room during the performance. After watching some “inspiring” and “exceptional” skaters on the ice, she headed to other parts of the county, including the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington, Papplewick Pumping Station and Newstead Abbey.
