Kasper Schmeichel’s Celtic contract details revealed as Leicester City hero set for Parkhead move

Kasper Schmeichel is on the verge of completing a stunning move to Celtic.

The Hoops have been in the market for a new No1 since Joe Hart announced he would retire in February. The influential Englishman departed Parkhead in May as a Double winner after helping the club win the Premiership and Scottish Cup. But Brendan Rodgers has been forced to start pre-season with Scott Bain between the sticks after failing to bring in a replacement.

Sparta Prague star Peter Vindahl Jensen has been high on the list of targets, but Celts would have to shell out more than £8m to sign the uncapped Dane. Now, it emerged last night that current Denmark goalkeeper Schmeichel is set to be confirmed as the club’s first summer signing.

Schmeichel is a free agent after spending a year in Belgium with Anderlecht. The experienced shotstopper is actually older than the recently retired Joe Hart and turns 38 in November. But Rodgers knows Schmeichel from their time together at Leicester City and sees him as a like-for-like replacement for Hart.

Barring any medical issues, Schmeichel is expected to be unveiled as a Celtic player ahead of next week’s trip to the USA, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Premier League winner will sign a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.
