Aston Villa and Tottenham given transfer hope for Archie Gray after £40m Leeds United move

Aston Villa are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Leeds United’s young wonderkid Archie Gray.

The 18-year-old was set to sign for Brentford after Leeds agreed a deal in principle between the two clubs. However, at the 11th hour, Leeds rejected the Bees’ £40million move, with our sister title LeedsLive claiming the Championship side were unhappy with the structure of the deal.

Gray travelled to London yesterday for a medical but the move has now been called off. It is unclear whether Brentford will return and satisfy Leeds with a new offer.

Villa are said to be one of a number of clubs keeping an eye on the situation, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also interested in Thorp Arch’s prodigy. The Athletic report that Spurs are currently working on a deal to sign the teenager.

Speaking earlier this year, Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe was unable to rule out the possibility of Gray leaving Elland Road as the Championship struggled to stay within Profit and Sustainability regulations.

“If I can paint the big picture for you, there are certain things we need to do, and we will make sure that we are in full compliance with P&S, as we have always been,” Marathe said. “And there are certain tradeoffs that we have to make, and so we’ll have to get to the drawing board and figure out what moves we have to make to make sure that we are in compliance. It’s too early to tell.

“Obviously Archie is a tremendous player, as are all the players who have worked so hard for us, but, you know, every season brings changes, so I can’t comment on that yet, but we’ll see what happens.”
