Motherwell got their Scottish League Cup Group G campaign off to a flying start with a three-goal win over fourth-tier Edinburgh City.

Debutant Kofi Balmer, who joined from Crystal Palace this summer, opened the scoring for the visitors when he headed in a corner from veteran Andy Halliday in the first half.

Fellow defender Dan Casey scored the second goal shortly after the break, once again finishing from a corner.

Right-back Stephen O’Donnell scored the third goal to secure victory for Stuart Kettlewell’s hosts in the Premier League.

In the group’s other game, Championship side Partick Thistle survived a scare before defeating part-time League 1 visitors Montrose 3-2.
