And his blistering show on the town green – five years after his last appearance at Scotland’s top festival – sent the crowd into a frenzy.

The down-to-earth singer-songwriter from Castlemilk — famous for his independence after rejecting a record seal — took the stage wearing a Peaky Blinders-style cap.

Fans had already seen his protégé Dylan John Thomas, 27 — hailed as an inspiration after growing up in foster care before releasing a Top 40 album — take the spotlight on the main stage.

Superfan Kelly Ross was left emotional two years after attending one of Cinnamon’s record-breaking back-to-back shows at Hampden Park.

NHS Worker Kelly, 38, from Leven, Fife, attended with her carpet fitter son Conner, 18. She said: “We saw Gerry at Hampden and he was amazing.

“It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Dylan has been a huge inspiration to my son who is going through a tough time. We were looking forward to seeing him together.”

“It’s all enjoyable music that represents Scottish culture brilliantly.”

Fan Courtney Doyle, 25, couldn’t wait to see her hero perform live for the first time yesterday. She admitted: “I love Gerry Cinnamon. I’ve never seen him before, although I know all his songs and one in particular — Belter — as my ex used to say, that reminded him of me.”

O star — real name Gerard Crosbie — put in the kind of performance that showed why he has amassed a £4.5m fortune in the past year.

The Courteeners had the unenviable task of taking the stage before him.

They did history last year, when a re-released version of debut album St Jude finally reached number one 15 years later — beating the likes of Taylor Swift and SZA to the top spot.

And the Manchester indie trio’s enduring popularity remained clear as the crowd sang along to their hits.

The lads, led by singer Liam Fray, swapped places with headliner Cinnamon six years after he was their support act at the city’s OVO Hydro.

And Glasgowian protégé Dylan delighted festival-goers by performing a surprise Abba cover Mamma Mia. Glasgow’s Dylan also had to ignore technical difficulties – admitting he couldn’t hear himself for much of the show.
