BBC’s High Country – Full Cast, Episodes, Plot and Filming Locations

The BBC will air the first episode of its “gripping” new Australian crime drama High Country this week, which focuses on an investigation into five missing people who have gone missing in the wilderness. The series begins on Saturday 13 July and follows Detective Constable Andrea (Andie) Whitford as she is transferred to the small town of Brokenridge in the Victorian High Country – a mountainous area in south-east Australia.

Whitford is asked to tackle the mysterious case of five missing people, a head-to-head investigation that uncovers a web of murder, revenge and deceit. Over the course of the eight-part series, she finds herself at odds with the locals and things get complicated when she involves a psychic with a questionable past.

The drama is a fictional story, but inspired by real events, and was created by Marcia Gardner and John Ridley. It first aired on the Australian streaming service Binge in March 2024.

Is BBC1’s High Country a true story and what’s the plot?

When Detective Andie Whitford is transferred to the High Country, a rural and mountainous area of Australia, she is thrust into a baffling case involving five missing people who have seemingly disappeared into the wilderness. Through a “tense” and high-stakes investigation, she discovers that the biggest mystery is her own and that her true identity lies at the heart of the puzzle.

Leah Purcell, who plays Andie, previously said: “Andie is a fearless woman, but there’s also a vulnerability to her, which is nice. And what I liked is that she’s quieter, she’s an observer.

“And I think that’s what makes her a great cop. She observes things, she absorbs things — and she’s a deep, deep thinker. I think a cop show is a great drama. You have everything in it. So when you have a mystery thriller, it’s an opportunity to bring the audience together, sitting on the couch at home with their family — and actually, it generates discussion. That’s when you know you’ve got a good show.”

Although the plot is fictional, it is “inspired” by real events.
